Tributes

Buff Tanner Massey, age 83, wife of John K. Massey, of Forestview Rd., died Monday, September 13, 2004 at her residence following an illness. Mrs. Massey was born in Douglas, GA, a daughter of the late Carl Robert and Bertha Mae Exum Tanner. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Conway where she taught various Sunday School Classes, was a choir member, a leader in Women's Missionary Union, leading Sunbeams Children's Missions Organization and the Girls Auxiliary teenage girls missions organization, as well as serving as a Vacation Bible School Leader. Mrs. Massey was also a member of Conway's Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club, Camellia Garden Club and was a volunteer with the Conway Hospital Auxiliary. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, where she received a degree in Home Economics. Following graduation, she was employed by the Farmers Home Administration as an agent educating residents as to proper food preparation and nutrition. Mrs. Massey was active in the PTA Parent Teacher Association serving as president, and was active with her sons in Cub Scouting. She taught in the Horry County Public Schools from 1967-1971 and was predeceased by her first husband, William James Langston a casualty of WWII. Surviving in addition to her husband of Conway are four sons, Jim Langston and his wife Debbie, Kinny Massey and his wife Donna, Philip T. Massey and his wife Holly, and Berns Massey and his wife Paula all of Conway; eight grandchildren, Buffy Smith and her husband Andy, Ginger Massey, Christian Massey, Beverly Wilhelm and her husband Tad, Mark Massey, Rachel Massey, Wendy Massey, and Tanner Massey; two great-grandchildren Drew Smith and Dever Smith; one brother, Carl Tanner and his wife Katherine of Walnut Creek, CA. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday from the First Baptist Church of Conway with Rev. J. Anderson Bass and Rev. Bill Bagnal officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.
