Emma M. Adams

Emma M. Adams, 80, of South Wood Community in Surfside Beach, SC, passed away on April 7th after an eleven year battle with Alzheimer’s. She was a resident of NHC Health Care. Mrs. Adams was the fourth of four daughters of Luther Moir and Florence (Walters) Walker of Reidsville, NC. Emma attended the Reidsville schools and then graduated in 1951 from Danville Regional Medical Center School of Nursing, Danville, VA. She then worked as a nurse, then Head Nurse on 2B at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. In 1963, Emma returned to Reidsville, NC and worked at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC as head Nurse for Unit 4500. Upon her marriage to her husband Jerry, she worked at Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, VA for nearly seventeen years. In 1992 she was Nurse of the Year for the hospital. She retired from nursing in December 1993. Emma enjoyed music, dining out and she loved to travel. Her trips included Bermuda, Alaska; some of her favorite cities were Los Angeles, Phoenix, Boston, and New York City along with trips to Memphis and Nashville. A real highlight of her life was the time she spent visiting the Grand Canyon. Upon moving to South Carolina in September 1994, Emma became active with the Pennystone-Hathaway Luncheon Group and the Surfside United Methodist Church where she was involved in the senior luncheons. Emma is survived by her husband Jerry and two sisters, Annie Lee McAlister and Evelyn Stone, both of Reidsville, NC. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ree Williams, her parents, and her brothers-in-law Henry Stone, Ernest Williams, and Hunter McAlister; as well as two beloved nephews Donald Stone and Phillip Williams. A memorial service will be held at Goldfinch Funeral Home Beach Chapel at 1:30 PM, Saturday, April 16, 2011. Burial will be at a later date at LOWES Church cemetery in Reidsville, NC.
