Conway....George Andrew Smith of Conway, South Carolina; died Sunday, January 11, 2009. Born in Danbury, Connecticut, he was the son of Mildred Gisselbrecht and Lawrence Andrew Smith. He was married to Elaine Carey Smith for 57 years, until her death in September 2008. After serving in the Army, he graduated from Springfield College with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Health. He then held various public health positions including: Assistant Director of Health Education at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and McClellan AFB in Sacramento, California; Field Representative for Indiana Heart Foundation, Richmond, Indiana; Executive Director of Southern Maryland Heart Association; and Assistant to the Director for the Consumer Product Safety Commission. During this time, he was a member of the American Burn Association and authored "The Burn Problem" and co-authored "Epidemiologic Factors in Burn Injuries." His work led him to live in Oklahoma, California, Indiana, Connecticut, and Maryland. He retired to Conway, with his wife, Elaine, in 1988. As a member of the Myrtle Trace Community he enjoyed bowling and golf. His love of basketball he co-owned a semi professional team in Oklahoma led him to become an avid fan of the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers. He was active in their fundraising efforts and served on the Board of Directors for the CINO club. He was member of the Masonic Lodge of Midwest City, Oklahoma and the Omar Shrine Temple in Mout Pleasant, SC. He is survived by three children: Donna Robert Ebling; Vickie Geoffrey Paytas; and Lawrence C Smith all of Maryland. Also surviving are a granddaughter Carey Paytas of, Maryland and a niece, Holly Layman, of Connecticut. He included the staffs at Side Wheeler and Villa Romano in his circle of friends. As an indication of how much he enjoyed his martinis and "smokes," the Side Wheeler named the drink of Beefeater on the rocks as a "George Smith."
