Dr. Jim Floyd

Dr. James Leon "Jimmy" Floyd, Jr., passed away at home on September 9, 2026, surrounded by family. Of all of his accomplishments, he was most proud of the people closest to him: Charlotte Sloan; Lee Floyd; Austin Floyd; and Brandon Skipper. He was equally proud of his grandchildren, Jay, Meyer, Grayson, Beck, and Rowan; his daughters-in-law, Kelli Floyd and Lyndsay Knowles; his loving sister, Jo McDonald, her husband, Chris, and their children, Christen and Chad; and his stepson, Josh Sloan. He was predeceased by his parents, James Leon Floyd, Sr., and Juanita Black Floyd. Doc, as many people called him, was born in Mullins, SC, on April 6, 1951, and grew up in Aynor, where he spent his days learning to farm tobacco from his father and role model and frightening his mother with his love of fast cars. However, he quickly fell in love with a different type of calling: music. He and his cousin and lifelong best friend, Bert Floyd, formed Doc's first band, the Wild Affair, playing dances and battles of the bands from the local high school gym all the way to town. From there, he went on to play with a number of acts, but the artist he was proudest of sharing the stage with was George McCorkle of the Marshall Tucker Band, who became a close friend. McCorkle even invited Doc to play the Hammond organ on his 1999 album American Street, one of Doc's fondest memories. Despite his moonlighting as a rock-n-roller, most people knew Doc from his more than four decades of taking care of people as a family physician. For his many contributions to the community, he was presented with the Jefferson Award in 2021 and consistently recognized for his excellence in care, which came as no surprise to his patients or those who worked with him. He never turned anyone away, regardless of their circumstances, and he genuinely loved helping people heal. Doc graduated from Wofford College in 1973, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, and from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1980, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and a nominee for the Order of the Palmetto. In 2017, Doc married Charlotte, who became the great love of his life and his steady companion through every chapter that followed. Doc loved a good laugh just as much as he loved music and practicing medicine, and anyone who was the target of one of his practical jokes knew that it was a true sign of his affection. He took many childhood family trips to waterski at White Lake, NC, a tradition he kept with his own family. Doc also spent many summers on the Intracoastal Waterway, logging hundreds of hours in the boat with his boys. Doc always had many stories to tell, whether they were about the time he played braille chess with Ray Charles on his tour bus, the phone calls he took from James Brown, or the many life lessons he learned from his father. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, September 13, 2026 at Pisgah Global Methodist Church with Sam Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
