John D. Edmond (Jack), husband of Dorris Jones Edmond (of Aynor, SC), died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 18, 2016 in his home at Aldersgate in Charlotte. He was 98 1/2. He is survived by their son Winston Edmond of Conway, SC. He was born in Amsterdam, NY in 1918, son of Emil V.B. Edmond and Myrtle Loder Edmond, but grew up in El Cajon, California, where he attended high school and San Diego State College (Class of 1940). Commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, he served aboard the USS TENNESSEE (BB 43) in 1940 and 1941, the North Atlantic and Murmansk convoys in 1942, and then as combat readiness officer in the 6th naval district headquarters in Charleston, SC. There he met and married his wife Dorris. He next served as an operations officer on the staff of TRANSRON 23 in the Pacific theater, then as navigator on the USS EUROPA bringing troops back from Europe. He was decorated for valor by the Secretary of the Navy. Jack came to Charlotte, NC, in 1948, joining the stock brokerage firm of Thompson & McKinnon, where he became manager before joining Bache and Co. He later joined Dean Witter, then retired in 1980. Before retiring, he was a long time member of the Charlotte City Club, Joppa Lodge, Oasis Temple, and the Luther Snyder Bible Class at Myers Park Methodist Church as well as various civic, cultural and charitable organizations. He served as President of the Charlotte Navy League, commanded the naval reserve divisions and battalion in Charlotte, and retired as a Commander in the U.S. Navy. Jack wants to express his deep gratitude and thanks to all the veterans of our country's conflicts who have fought and served and died to preserve the blessings we have enjoyed in this magnificent country. He considered himself a lucky survivor who was blessed by having lived at this time and place with a magnificent wife and family, all made possible by the sacrifices of our ancestors and veterans. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday at Cool Springs Southern Methodist Church. Burial will be beside Dorris, his wife of 55 years, at Cool Springs Southern Methodist Church Cemetery near Aynor, SC. Visitation will be held at the Church from 1:00 until 2:00 PM.
