Longs... Melissa Butler Soles, age 49, passed away peacefully with her beloved family by her side on Monday, May 11, 2015. Melissa was strong, independent and fearless. She battled cancer with determination and courage and never let it interfere with living life to the fullest. She was part of a huge loving family whom she loved to spend time with and enjoyed making memories with over the years. She was very thankful for her community and the members of Camp Swamp United Methodist Church where she was a lifelong member. Melissa will be remembered for so many things. She drew strength from the land that she lived on and loved. Spending time outside and planting flowers around her home brought her much joy. Melissa was preceded in death by her loving parents, J. R. "Jimmy" Butler and Linda Hammond Butler; paternal grandparents, Rufus and Laurie Butler; maternal grandparents, M. E. and Elizabeth Hammond; and her beloved husband, Charlie Soles. Those left to cherish Melissa's memory are her devoted sister and best friend, Valarie Butler Davis and her husband Guilds Davis and their baby girl due to be born in October all of Charleston, SC. Also surviving is her precious stepdaughter, Jessica Soles of Wilmington, NC; a special cousin/sister, DeAnna Brown and family of Leland, NC; stepmother, Hilda Butler of Parkton, NC, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends who each shared a special relationship with Melissa. A celebration of Melissa's life will be held Saturday, May 16, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. from Camp Swamp United Methodist Church with Rev. Glen Dameron and Rev. Chip Whilden. Committal services will follow in the Butler Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the committal service in the Camp Swamp United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Butler Cemetery, 250 Pond Road, Longs, SC 29568; Camp Swamp United Methodist Church, 853 Camp Swamp Road, Loris, SC 29569; or to a charity of one's choice to fight cancer.
