Myrtle Beach, SC… Michael J. Cherry, age 89, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC. Mr. Cherry was born April 28, 1937 in Lansing, MI a son of the late Royal and Zelma Cushing Cherry. After graduation from Resurrection High School in Lansing, Mr. Cherry received a BBA degree from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. He was employed for thirty-five years by General Motors and held a variety of field sales positions retiring from the Cincinnati Zone in 1995. In 1997 he relocated to the Southcreek community at Myrtle Beach National where he enjoyed golf and served as President, Treasurer, and Secretary of the Men's Golf Association. Mr. Cherry had worked part-time as a bartender for several beach front hotels and was recently employed by Burroughs and Chapin at Cane Patch Driving Range, always enjoying his contact with the tourist trade. He also served with InCare Hospice as a Volunteer spending time with Horry County's terminally ill. Mr. Cherry was a member of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati Catholic Church in Myrtle Beach where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of St. James Catholic Church in Conway where he was a member of the Pastoral Visitors Team and also served a three year term on the Pastor's Parish Council. Distributing Holy Eucharist to residents at the Pruitt-Health Center/Conway was the highlight of his Sunday morning schedule. Mr. Cherry proudly served with the U.S. Army's 24th Infantry Division at Henry Kaserne in Munich, Germany during the Cold War and was a life member of the "Victory Division's" Alumni Association. He was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and Patrick Cherry; a sister, Caroline Cherry Brown; his eldest daughter, Ellen Cherry Delawder; his youngest daughter, Christy Gonzales-Law; and a son-in-law, Gordon Clarkson. Surviving Mr. Cherry are his loving wife of 45 years, Heidi Cherry of the residence; a son, Christopher (Ann) Cherry of Lottsburg, VA; three daughters, Martha Clarkson of Fredericksburg, VA, Alice (Bryan) Freeman of Fredericksburg, VA, and Angela (David) Mountain of Murrells Inlet, SC; nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday, September 18, 2026 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel with a Prayer Service at 6:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel with Father David Nerbun officiating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Lansing, MI at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
