Philip Wesley Comfort went home to be with Jesus December 31, 2022. Phil was born on October 28, 1950, in Sewickly, Pennsylvania and was known as Husband, Father, Brother, Teacher, Scholar, Author, Editor, Poet and Surfer. He was married to Georgia for 50 years before she passed away. Phil and Georgia had seen God move many times in their life and most notably in Georgia’s diagnosis with stage four breast cancer. The doctors gave her one year to live but we are so grateful that God had other plans! Phil was well known and respected in New Testament circles as a Bible Scholar’s Scholar. He has a doctorate in Literary Interpretation from the University of South Africa. He dedicated 33 years of his life as senior editor with Tyndale House Publishers in Chicago, where he and Georgia raised their sons. He was coordinating editor/translator of the New Testament of the New Living Translation of the Bible. He authored over fifteen academic books and six books of poetry. One of his books was nominated for the Push Cart Award. Phil and Georgia retired to Pawleys Island, South Carolina for the warmer weather and to fulfilled Phil’s dream to surf. Phil began surfing at the age of 47. Phil was an avid soccer fan, but being a proud papa brought him his greatest joy. He taught English, New Testament and Greek at several colleges including Trinity Seminary and Wheaton College and Costal Carolina University. Most recently he taught a bible class at Pawleys Island Community Church for 20 years. The impact of his writing and teaching has made an untold impact on the Christian Community world-wide. Mostly though, Phil loved Jesus. While he had an amazing intellect, it is his heart that set him apart. He would spend each morning on the beach in worship of God’s creation and talking to Jesus. Phil will be dearly missed by his family, his church family and by the countless pastors and teachers he inspired through his writing. Phil was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years Georgia Comfort, parents Richard and Dorothy Comfort, father-in-law George Riser and sister-in-law Robin Comfort. Phil is survived by his three sons Jeremy Comfort, John Comfort (Angela) and Peter Comfort; four grandsons Sage Cross, Jonah Comfort, Reid Comfort and Drake Comfort; brothers Richard Comfort Jr. (Carolyn) and Gregory Comfort (Maureen); mother-in-law, Joan Algeo Riser; sister-in-law Sally Nachamkin; brothers in law Bob Riser and Ted Riser as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
