Ross Desmond

With heavy hearts, but with the assurance of God's promise of eternal life, we announce that Ross Desmond entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 4, 2026, at the age of 54, following a courageous and determined battle with cancer. Through every challenge he faced, Ross demonstrated remarkable strength, steadfast faith, and unwavering trust in God's plan. While cancer challenged his body, it never diminished his spirit, his joy, or his belief that God was walking beside him every step of the journey. Born to Mary and Terry Desmond on July 9, 1972, in Wausau, Wisconsin, Ross lived a life rich with faith, family, friendship, laughter, and service to others. Those who knew him best would tell you that his greatest gifts were not found in his professional accomplishments or athletic achievements, but in his remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and loved. His smile was genuine, his laughter contagious, and his generosity boundless. Ross's love affair with golf began in his very first foursome, alongside his father, Terry, his mother, Mary, and his brother, Mike. What began as family time quickly became a lifelong passion that would influence nearly every chapter of his life. Golf provided him with countless friendships, unforgettable experiences, and the opportunity to impact others through a game he dearly loved. Following an outstanding collegiate golf career at Campbell University, Ross earned All-Conference honors and was named Team MVP, distinctions that reflected not only his talent but also his competitiveness, dedication, and leadership. It was there that he forged lifelong friendships and further developed a passion that would become his vocation. After graduation, Ross began his professional career where his collegiate career had flourished, at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Rising through the ranks to become Head Golf Professional, he quickly earned the respect of members and colleagues alike. He later served as Head Golf Professional at Crescent Golf Club in Salisbury, North Carolina, and Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe, North Carolina. As his career evolved, so did the scope of his leadership. Ross served as General Manager of The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation in Aiken, South Carolina, for nearly thirteen years, helping transform the club while fostering a genuine sense of community among members and staff. He later served as General Manager at Frankfort Country Club in Frankfort, Kentucky, and Stonegate Golf Club in Kissimmee, Florida, before concluding his distinguished career as General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of Wachesaw Plantation Club in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Regardless of his position or the venue, Ross consistently improved the appeal of the facilities, elevated the performance of his teams, and enhanced the overall experience of members. While his professional expertise was undeniable, his greatest impact came through his genuine care for people. Ross possessed a rare ability to connect with others and make everyone feel important. A gifted storyteller, gracious host, and the quintessential entertainer, he brought joy, laughter, and warmth wherever he went. Whether organizing an event, such as his marquis July 4th celebrations, or simply greeting members by name, sharing stories after a round of golf, or gathering friends and family around a table, Ross made every occasion memorable. Ross was a devoted husband to Tanya, thanks in part to his persistence during their time together at Campbell University. After much persistence, Tanya finally said “yes”, and as Ross would fondly tell it, she had him “hook, line, and sinker” from there. What began with that first “yes” grew into a love story spanning more than 30 years. Tanya was the love of Ross’ life and his faithful partner through life’s greatest joys and most difficult challenges. They had just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, a beautiful milestone honoring the life, love, and family they had built together, that was the center of Ross’ world. He was a proud and devoted father to Morgan Leigh, Ryerson, Hope Elizabeth, and Patrick, and a cherished bonus dad to Joseph, embracing him with the same unconditional love that defined his role as a father. Nothing brought Ross greater pride than watching his children grow, chase their dreams, and supporting them every step of the way. Above all else, Ross was a family man. His greatest joy came not from accomplishments or possessions, but from the people gathered around his table, in his backyard, on the golf course, or cheering alongside him on a Sunday afternoon. He loved bringing people together, whether for holidays, family vacations, cookouts, celebrations, or simply an evening spent sharing stories and laughter. Aided by his mastery of grilling and serving behind the bar his Gaga built, his home was a place of warmth and hospitality where everyone felt welcomed. Sports were another lifelong passion. Few things brought out his enthusiasm like watching his beloved Green Bay Packers, highlighted by his annual late season trip with friends and family to the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field, including a New Year’s Day game with his entire family in celebration of his 50th birthday. Win or lose, he remained fiercely loyal to the green and gold and appreciated how the Packers’ games provided an opportunity to share time with those that mattered so much to him. He also loved college basketball and football and enjoyed gathering with family and friends to watch, celebrate, debate, and cheer. Watching sports with Ross was more than a pastime; it was an experience marked by passion, laughter, and fellowship. At the center of Ross's life was his deep Christian faith. He loved Jesus wholeheartedly and sought to reflect Christ's love through the way he treated others. His faith was not reserved for Sundays; it was evident in his kindness, humility, generosity, and genuine concern for people. Whether encouraging a friend, mentoring a colleague, welcoming a stranger, or supporting someone through difficult circumstances, Ross consistently demonstrated the love of Christ in both word and deed. His confidence in God's grace provided strength during life's greatest challenges and shaped the husband, father, brother, leader, and friend he became. Ross was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Terry Desmond; his beloved daughter, Hope Elizabeth; and his mother-in-law, Larraine Steinle. Though their absence left a permanent space in his heart, he honored their memories throughout his life and looked forward to the promise of being reunited with them. Ross is survived by his loving wife, Tanya; his children, Morgan Leigh, Ryerson, and Patrick; his bonus son, Joseph; and his brother, Mike, sister-in-law, Jody and niece, Sarah, and his father-in-law Alan Steinle who mourn their loss while finding comfort in countless cherished memories and the blessing of knowing Ross is reunited with his Lord and Savior. He also leaves behind many extended family members, dear friends, colleagues, and club members whose lives were immeasurably enriched by knowing him. Those who loved Ross will remember his easy smile, his generous heart, his unwavering faith, his loyalty, his resilience, and his extraordinary ability to bring people together. He taught us that life's greatest blessings are found in faith, family, friendship, laughter, and time spent with those we love.Though our hearts ache in his absence, we rejoice that he is cancer free and at peace in the presence of his Savior. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched.
