James “JJ” Joseph Costello, 86, died Monday, October 9, 2023 in Myrtle Beach, SC. Born June 20, 1937 in Ottawa, IL he was the son of the late Donald Arthur and Genieva Costello. JJ graduated from Ottawa Township High School in 1955. He was widowed by his beloved wife Bonita “Bonnie” and was predeceased by his first wife, Carolyn B. Negley and grandson Jonathan Cox. “JJ” is survived by his sister Mary Jo Stohl (Gary) of Ottawa, Illinois; a son Jeffrey Costello (Denise) of Fuquay-Varina, NC; a daughter Julie Kinard (Chuck) of Columbia SC; a step-son Jason Cox (Julie) Murrells Inlet; a step-daughter Brenna Brantly (Jay) of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren Dylan Costello (Abby) of Snow Hill, NC; Melissa Kinard of Lexington, SC; Aaron Martin of Myrtle Beach and numerous nieces and nephews. While serving in the US Airforce he fought in Vietnam and retired with the rank of Master Sergeant. After the Air Force he moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, making it his home for over 51 years. There he served as a member of the Horry County Police for 22 years before retiring as a Sergeant. His greatest passion in life was his family, serving those he worked for and with. He loved helping others to live life to the fullest. During his years he possessed great joy in all kinds of sports. He was active as a coach for many years in TX and SC. He was a great teacher and leader, he taught his left handed son golf playing right handed. Thus, they played many years in the “Father & Son Team Classic” golf tournament winning several years of first place. After his health began to decline he passed that torch to his grandson, Dylan who along with his Dad, carried on that Costello name in a second place win while he cheered them on! JJ touched many lives and his legacy will live on for years in those that he knew and touched. He didn’t know a stranger, always served his family and community with a great respect. He will truly be missed by many. JJ was the best father and grandfather anyone could have asked for and will be forever loved. As he would say: “Capisce!” A funeral service for JJ will be held at 2PM Sunday October 15, 2023 at Goldfinch Funeral home Beach Chapel. Entombment with full Military honors will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2PM prior to the service.
